Following the success of our previous two seasons, we are delighted to welcome you to our third season of Classical Music concerts, beginning in September.

David Waterman (cellist), Curator of the Classical Music Series, writes:

We look forward to welcoming you again to the Classical Music Series in JW3’s intimate and friendly hall. This year, four of our concerts feature chamber music combinations we are hearing for the first time:

Early Music: Jonathan Manson is possibly Europe’s most distinguished viola da gamba player; Helen Charlston, a thrilling and moving mezzo- soprano; and the marvellous archlutenist is Segio Buchell. Their fascinating programme includes a complete Handel Cantata, and profoundly moving works by Purcell, Dowland, Marais and Charpentier, all born before Bach.

Four-hands piano: Sharing one piano, Mishka Rushdie Momen and Alasdair Beatson together play a beautifully conceived duet programme including Schubert, Ravel and Rachmaninov. Both pianists have already won the hearts of our JW3 audience so it will be very special to hear them collaborate in this unusual programme.

String Sextets: The delightful Fibonacci Quartet, rising international stars, are joined by the superb Luba Tunnicliffe on viola, and myself on cello to perform sextets by Strauss, Dvorak and Tchaikovsky. These pieces are supremely melodious and full-hearted, and thrillingly exploit the richly sonorous possibilities of having six string players.

Quartet with additional viola:  One of Mozart’s greatest ever works, the g minor quintet, is included, and an utterly sublime slow movement of Bruckner, a composer we have not yet encountered at JW3.  This group includes the outstandingly expressive violinist, Sini Simonen; Alessandro Ruisi, until recently the marvellously poetic first violinist of the Ruisi Quartet; the brilliant Austrian-based violist Sào Soulez Larivière and once again Luba Tunnicliffe and myself.

In our piano trio concert, we meet Maria Włoszczowska, the young Polish violinist who is deservedly building a terrific international reputation for her outstanding finesse, imagination and very individual interpretations. Alasdair Beatson and I are joining her in a programme of Schumann and Brahms major masterpieces, preceded by Mendelssohn’s dramatic and fresh F major violin and piano sonata.

The Season is launched on September 30th with a piano recital being given by the internationally illustrious and much-loved Dame Imogen Cooper playing a classic programme mainly of Impromptus by Schubert, interlaced with Bach chorales and Beethoven Bagatelles.
