A snippet of 16mm film offers an emotionally charged, meditative glimpse into the lives of the unsuspecting Jewish citizens of a small Polish village at the precipice of World War II.
Three Minutes: A Lengthening■
Synopsis
3,000 Jews lived in the small Polish town of Nasielsk before the war; fewer than 100 survived it. A three-minute excerpt of a home movie filmed in 1938 captures the curious and animated faces of men, women and children outside the synagogue. It conveys their excitement, caused by the rare presence of a movie camera, as the knowledge of what followed triggers a sense of incomprehensible loss. Co-produced by British filmmaker Steve McQueen and narrated by actress Helena Bonham Carter, this mesmerising, poignant essay film offers a rare glimpse into a vanished world.
