Futurists speculate that we are heading towards a ‘singularity,’ where AI will outsmart humans, and humanity will coalesce into a single, ever-expanding mind for which data is everything.
How does this idea relate to traditional conceptions of God? Are such ideas of oneness good for humanity? What space do they leave for individuality and difference? And will religion have a place in such a world?
Harris Bor goes in search of answers to these questions drawing on Jewish tradition and western philosophy in an attempt to identify what makes us human.
Harris Bor is a Research Fellow at the London School of Jewish Studies, a commercial barrister, and author of “Staying Human: A Jewish Theology for the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” He holds a PhD in religion from Cambridge University and is a rabbinic scholar with the Montefiore Endowment.
