A study of the various denominations and ideological divisions of the Jewish world.
Liberal, Reform, Orthodox, Renewal, Hasidism, blah, blah, blah. Are these various positions just drunken folk fighting on a sinking ship?
In this five week course, Clive will explore the variety of religious, and even non-religious positions taken up by Jews around the world and consider whether it reveals a wonderful richness in the Jewish people, or a depressing tendency to commit to a zero sum game.
- Week 1: The birth of denominations
- Week 2: A quick sketch of some of the choices currently on offer - Modern Orthodox, Haredi-ism, Hasidism, Conservative and Masorti
- Week 3: Completing the picture - other options on offer - Progressive, Reform, Liberal, Renewal, Kabbalah, Humanist
- Week 4: Does any of it make any real difference? Why don't sefardim and mizrakhim play this game?
- Week 5: Recent alliances: with UK Liberals and Reform coming together, is the future increasing amalgamation of ever more fragmentation?
