Join two remarkable storytellers; puppet theatre maker, Russell Dean, and an author and activist, Onjali Q Raúf, as they talk about giving a voice to refugee children.
Russell Dean is the Artistic Director of Strangeface, one of the UK’s leading theatre companies for puppetry and masks. Their latest production, Eli and the Golem (coming to JW3 in June) is an evocative and tenderly told 20th century refugee story that speaks to our world today. It was first created as a response to the journey of Little Amal, a puppet of a young Syrian refugee child who travelled 8,000km in support of migration and diversity. Eli and Amal met face-to-face in Dover in October 2021.
Onjali Q Raúf is the award-winning and best-selling author of The Boy at the Back of the Class, her first book, a story inspired by an encounter with a Syrian mother and her baby she met while working in refugee camps in Calais and Dunkirk. She has gone on to win the Waterstone Children’s Book Prize and be selected as a World Book Day Author. Her latest book, The Lion Above the Door, explores buried identities, revealing how our past is shaped by those who are allowed to tell its story.
NB: Both adults and children require tickets to attend this event.
