Prior to 7 October, it had become increasingly popular to write off any hope for a two state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Yet in the context of the war, the Biden administration put new energy into it. Why has the two state proposal been around so long without being realised? Has it become impossible to achieve, as some claim? Is there really any alternative? And how does this relate to hopes for widening the peace between Israel and its Arab neighbours?
Dr. Toby Greene is a Visiting Fellow in the Middle East Centre at the London School of Economics, and a Lecturer in the Politics Department at Bar Ilan University. He has a background in policy research and political communications. His research and teaching focus on foreign policy, especially in Europe and the Middle East.
He publishes and lectures widely for academic, professional and general audiences and is the author of Blair, Labour & Palestine: Conflicting Views on Middle East Peace After 9/11 (Bloomsbury Academic, 2013). Before entering academia, Toby was the Director of Research for BICOM, and the founding Deputy Editor of its journal Fathom.
