This month’s online cafe will explore LGBTQ+ representation in TV and film.
What does Queerness on screen look like? What was the first LGBTQ+ storyline you saw on screen? Old-school murderous lesbians? Or five dashing young gay men offering makeovers? Where would Mrs Maisel be without Susie Myerson? And how did Transparent reconfigure what representation could look like to legions of fans?
Join Mekella Broomberg as she examines the some of the most alarming and endearing representations of LGBTQ+ characters on screen. And if you’d like, share some of your own examples (everything from hi-to no brow is welcome).
Mekella has a degree in film, worked in cinemas for years and even created her own pop-up up rooftop cinema. She regularly presents the Misogynist Film Club and is Head of Arts and Culture at JW3.
JW3 provides a safe space for anyone who identifies as LGBTQ+ or are currently exploring their identity. We will continue to host online LGBTQ+ cafes to create a regular sense of community and to explore issues relating to being LGBTQ+ and Jewish. This event is suitable for those who identify as LGBTQ+ and are aged 18 to 35.
