An account of a true historical tragedy, The Death of Zygielbojm is a timely reminder that we must always take evil seriously – and act against it.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with historian Roger Moorhouse, and Lord Alderdice, member of the House of Lords and Senior Fellow, Harris Manchester College, Oxford and chaired by JW3’s Head of Education Judy Trotter.

Panellists will dive deep into the reasons, outcomes and social perception of events that have been depicted in the film, trying to answer broader questions around historical morality, diplomacy, and taking a stance in the face of unbearable evil. Matters that recently became more relevant and current than we’d expect.

Zygielbojm

The Death of Zygielbojm

Synopsis

May 1943, Szmul Zygielbojm (Wojciech Mecwaldowski), a member of the Polish government-in-exile, commits suicide in London. This leads young British journalist Adam (Jack Roth) to follow the coroner’s investigation, in doing so revealing the significance of Zygielbojm’s mission in Great Britain: to convince the indifferent Allies to intervene in the Holocaust being perpetrated by Nazi Germany in Europe. An account of a true historical tragedy, The Death of Zygielbojm is a timely reminder that we must always take evil seriously – and act against it.
