Learn about the fascinating Jewish history of a Spanish island where a segregated group of devout Catholics were forced to marry amongst themselves and have suffered discrimination up until the last century for carrying last names that have Jewish roots. Some have decided to return to their ancestors' faith; they are the Chuetas and their story must be told.
Broadly the three sessions will look at Medieval Mallorca Jewish History; Life under the Mallorquin Inquisition & Crypto Jews and Chueta Discrimination & Present Day Jewish Rebirth.
Dani is originally from New Jersey, USA and moved to the island of Mallorca in 2014. He discovered the taboo Jewish history of the Conversos or Chuetas of the island. In 2018 he founded Limud Mallorca and has run over 50 successful events promoting diversity and inclusion in the small yet growing Jewish community. He is an elected member of the synagogue board and in December 2018 he founded Jewish Majorca - a tourism company connecting the island's past with its present in hopes of building a brighter future. He believes that the revival of modern Jewish life in Spain can be a shining light to the rest of the world and that greater awareness and tolerance is possible in a place known for its centuries of repression.
