Fill the Void is an enthralling, intimate and delicately portrayed story of a devout 18-year-old Israeli girl who is pressured to marry the husband of her late sister who died in childbirth.
Declaring her independence is not an option in Tel Aviv's ultra-Orthodox Hasidic community, where religious law, tradition and the rabbi's word are absolute.
Selected as one of our favourite films throughout SERET’s 10 year history, it’s accurate to say that when this film was released in 2012, it established a new audience for Israeli cinema across the world, and is the most awarded Israeli film ever made. This was a breakthrough film for its sympathetic look into the usually veiled life of the Hasidic community; for showing that we can all relate to the consequences of adhering to the strict interpretation of religious law, whatever our beliefs.
The film was the full-length feature debut for writer and director Rama Burshtein, who as an Ultra-Orthodox filmmaker has a unique take on life within her own community.
We’re delighted to bring this back to be enjoyed again
