Have you ever heard of Ashkenormativity?
It's the ringing challenge from non-Ashkenazi Jews that the Jewish community too often assumes that Ashkenazi forms - yiddish, gefilte fish, 'shabbos' and streimels - are the real thing. Indeed, not only are they 'the real thing' but we expect all non-Ashkenazi Jews to know about them too. Meanwhile the hugely rich and diverse Jewish world beyond remains a mystery for most Ashkenazi Jews or, for those with open minds at least, just a source of exotic garnish.
In this course, Clive will explore some of these other traditions in the Jewish world, broadening our view of what it is to be Jewish, do Jewish and eat Jewish. Note that we are not just talking Sephardi Jews, but all the myriad old and new diversity available to us, so much of it nearly forgotten. Why stick to a narrow Jewish view when you can embrace the world?
So if you've missed Mimouna, skipped Sigd, still feel nothing about the Farhud or don't know whether to eat, ride or celebrate Carciofi alla Giudia, then this is the course for you.
Clive Lawton is a superb presenter, knowledgeable and charismatic. Awarded an OBE for his contribution to the community he is an Educational consultant, a magistrate and a regular presenter around the world and at JW3 where his course subjects move between diverse subjects exploring literary, philosophical, historical and religious themes.
