The last century and a quarter has proved turbulent for Hungary.
In 1900 Hungary was part of the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary under the ageing Emperor Franz Josef. Within 14 years Hungary was engaged in a World War that led to the end of the Monarchy and the creation of an independent nation.
From a short flirtation with Marxism, Hungary swerved to the authoritarian Right under Adm. Horthy. World War Two saw Hungary again on the losing side and finding itself post war part of the Eastern Communist Bloc. With the Fall of Communism, hopes were high but soon dashed.
Today Hungary, despite being a member of the EU, is governed by the authoritarian figure of Viktor Orban.
