Misha and the Wolves is the dramatic tale of a woman whose holocaust memoir took the world by storm, but a fallout with her publisher - who turned detective - revealed an audacious deception created to hide a darker truth.

Misha And The Wolves

Synopsis

A Holocaust memoir published in the 1990s stunned the world: it told the incredible survival story of Misha Defonseca, a young Belgian-Jewish girl who, following the deportation of her parents, decided to walk to Germany to look for them. With just a few supplies and a compass, she navigated in the frozen woods, helped by a pack of wolves.

The book’s huge success prompted not only numerous TV appearances and a film adaptation but also the growing suspicion of an American publisher with whom Defonseca had had a fallout. The tangled web of deception the publisher subsequently exposed brought to light a bizarre hoax – and our full readiness to fall for it. This gripping, thought-provoking documentary proves, yet again, that truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

“Much of the lure of “Misha and the Wolves” is that it’s simply a tricky good yarn spun around the unbelievable things that human beings will do. But the movie also … taps into the soul of an era when fake reality is threatening to dislodge actual reality”
