CONFLICTED is a series of ten typographic posters curated by graphic designer Max Bloom.
Featuring quotes from Max’s interviews with members of the London Jewish community in response to the recent surge in antisemitism, they provide a vivid window into the pain, anger and confusion that many Jews throughout the UK are feeling at this time.
Max says: "Whatever your opinion on the conflict in the Middle East, I want this piece to show you that the Jewish community in London is a vulnerable minority and needs your support. The aim of this piece isn’t to deflect, distract, or draw pity. It is designed to show you that if we stand together against hate, whatever our religious or cultural background, we are stronger. And that’s the London I know and love."
Background to CONFLICTED
Over the last few years, Max has found different ways of responding creatively to rising antisemitism. After Wiley’s antisemitic outburst in 2020, Max saw how little many people knew about Judaism. His response was JEW-ISH, a podcast interviewing Jews from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures, aiming to demonstrate the amount of nuance inherent in the Jewish world. Guests included Hen Mazzig, Ezra Furman, Kosha Dillz, Eve Barlow, and many more.
After the recent surge in antisemitism, Max realised that Jewish voices were quickly becoming drowned out online, causing himself and many of his Jewish peers to withdraw from many non-Jewish spaces. The more conversations he had with his Jewish peers, the more he understood that Jewish voices needed to be heard if progress was to be made. However, it was clear that the toxic nature of social media was not the right place for this to happen.
So he created Conflicted as a way of amplifying those Jewish voices, raising awareness of how many Jews in the UK are feeling.
